Early Review: Disturbia

Early Review!!!!! Disturbia the new suspense thriller from director D.J. Caruso (Salton Sea) focuses on the life of a troubled teen Kale (Shia LeBeouf) after the tragic death of his father. One year after the event he is still deeply affected by his loss. One day without much provocation he attacks his Spanish teacher. This action then leads to his house arrest and Kale has a special house arrest tracker placed on his ankle. Bored with the 3 months he is to remain under house arrest Kale then starts to entertain himself by spying on his neighbors including his hot new neighbor Ashley (Sarah Roemer).

He then becomes aware of his neighbors everyday routine. But he starts to notice that something about neighbor Turner(David Morse) isn't right. Kale thinks Turner is a killer when one night he thinks he sees Turner attack a young woman. Or does he? His best friend Ronnie (Aaron Yoo) and Ashley start to help out with his stakeout and watch Turner. However, things take a turn when Kales mom (Carrie-Anne Moss) becomes taken with Turner and Kale finds that he must prove his neighbor is a killer before something happens to his mother or him. But its kind of hard to convince people, when everyone thinks you're a basketcase, troublemaker kid going stir-crazy.

To me this film was pretty good but not spectacular. It was a lot like watching a WB version of Hitchcock's Rear Window. You can always judge for yourself. The film opens nationwide April 13th.

Indie Pick O' The Day: The Commitments

Well not quite, they're Irish. The Commitments centers around a soul group in Ireland trying to make it big. Yup a soul band. In IRELAND! The group starts out as the brainchild of its manager Jimmy Rabbitte to bring soul music to Ireland. To him soul music is the expression of raw sex, sensuality, and freedom. The blacks in America expressed themselves that way when being oppressed during Civil rights. He felt as young Dubliners this was the best way to express themselves and do something different than what everyone else was trying to do.

He gathers a gaggle of young musicians and singers plus a seasoned "veteran" Joey "The Lips" Fagan a trumpet player who claims to have worked with soul great Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, and Sam Cooke just to name a few. They have a rocky start learning to play together as a band, getting venues to play at, and seeking an audience, but then get a strong local following.

When they start to have some sort of small success, they start to have internal problems in the band. The lead singer Deco's ego starts to balloon out of control. The girls who are the back up singers start to fight because they discover they are all sleeping with Joey. Jimmy gets angry at the sax player Dean as he becomes more engrossed in Jazz. So the band doesn't have a storybook ending, but that is what makes the movie that much more believable and poetic. Plus the movie has some great music. Just watch!!

Happy Friday :)

Indie pick 'O' the day: Beautiful Thing

This adorable tale of two english boys coming of age, discovering themselves and finding Love, has been dubbed on of the best gay films of our time.
With heartfelt performances by appealing cast members Glen Berry and Scott Neal who play the two smitten teenage boys , and a delicate blend of the romance and the heavier aspects in the movie, it is no wonder.
Directed by Hettie MacDonald , this 1996 film manages to capture all of the innocence and confusion of adolescense and the love story never winds up coming off as "tragic" the way most "coming-out" stories tend to.
refreshing Moving and at times funny, Beautiful Thing is a welcome treat, that will leave at least a slight warm hearted smirk on that icy tightly wound face of yours.

Indie Pick O' The Day: That Night

Remember That Night? This is a coming of age film that takes place in Long Island during the 1960's. It stars C. Thomas Howell (back when he was cute) and Juliette Lewis (back when she had a career). The film is about a 10 year old girl played Buffy's nemesis Eliza Dushku. She is totally obsessed with Juliette Lewis, which to me was kinda creepy. I mean the lil 10 year old watches Lewis undress every night and tries and smell her scarves. Hmmm...

Izzie...I mean Katherine Heigl is in it too. She plays Eliza's friend. Things with Eliza and Juliette change when Juliette gets knocked up by C Thomas Howell. Damn, and now Juliette is faced with the decision to keep or abort the baby.

Meanwhile, little Eliza's creepy lesbian fantasies about Juliette dissipate away as the local boy in town develops a crush on her. Her pubescene emerges and her attraction becomes mutual.

Superman: The Man Of Steel...blah

Sorry ladies and gentlemen, but this movie is blah....

The first one was crappy and if they use the same the same Sueprman and Lois Lane for the second one---I definitely know it's gonna suck!

Some of the worst chemistry I've seen on-screen who could actually see Clark Kent and Lois Lane hookin up? I know I couldn't!

Parker Posey and Kevin Spacey were the only actors that made the film worth watching. Too bad they won't be in the sequel. I don't plan on wasting anymore money of this doomed franchise.

SEEN O' The Day: Best In Show

The hilarious queen of indie cinema Miss Parker Posey is cracks me up in this scene. This is one of the best of the Christopher Guest mocumentaries Best In Show.

Indie Pick O' The Day: The Lives Of Others

The Lives Of Others

This recent Academy Award winner for best foreign film is definitely worth watching. This film comes from Germany and takes place in East Germany in the mid 80's a few years before the fall of the Berlin wall. Now I know that some of you are concerned because I said FOREIGN film. Yes that means subtitles. Yes that means you have to READ during the film. Get over it! A lot of good films have subtitles and you just have to accept it.

In East Germany the communist government had a surveillance branch whos' job it was to monitor and observe and citizens they thought were less than faithful to its socialist views. Oh yeah. Orwell was right. Big Brother was in fact watching. One of the top observers there is Captain Weisler. He is handed the assignment to watch and closely observe a writer/playwright Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend a German actress named Christa. As he is listening to the couple, Weisler becomes more engrossed in their life and starts to live vicariously through them. When Dreyman takes it upon himself to rebel against the socialist party and write papers that belittle his government, Weisler starts to lie in his report and protect Dreyman.

This movie exposes the tyranny and oppression that communism held over East Germany. For most of us twenty-somethings who were just kids when the Berlin wall came down, it is hard for us to imagine a world where your basic rights to live , think, and express yourself freely don't exist. This film tells a story of what people do in order to free themselves of Germany's vice hold over its people.

Girl On Fire

Who Should Be Cast in the New Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff??

So as you already know, Grey’s Anatomy---the best show in prime time television (according to Jamie) —is giving birth to a baby Grey’s Anatomy. In the TV world it’s called a "spin off".
Now, there have already been some actors attached to this show. We all know that
Kate Walsh (Dr. Addison Montgomery) is going to leave Seattle and moving to Los Angeles (where the show is set to take place).

We also know that
Taye Diggs will play a doctor on the show. Not sure if he’s Addison’s love interest, or just a co-worker, but I’m sure eventually they’ll be knockin boots.

Here are ABC’s choices so far for the new L.A. doctors:

Kate Walsh (as Dr. Addison Montgomery)
Taye Diggs
Merrin Dungey (Sandy on Boston Legal)
Amy Brenneman (known from Judging Amy)
Chris Lowell (from the now canceled Vernoica mars)
Tim Daly (he was on that show Wings)
Paul Adelstein (from Prison Break)

Ok is it me or does this cast make you want to fall asleep? Damn what a Boring Vanilla ass, CBS movie of the week collective this is, if Shonda wants this show to be able to come out from under the shadows of its original jugguranaut hit then they will need to add some interesting actors into the mix.

So we at NYIndieSeen, feel that first and foremost, we should be Hollywood casting directors. I mean just look at our picks for Spider man 4…casting at its best right?

**Disclaimer: we include actors who we WOULD NOT cast in Spidey 4 too if u choose to browse that blog**

Now back to Grey’s…so here are our pick for who should be cast in the new Grey’s Anatomy spin off!!

Tamara Taylor – she’s the cutey from Party Of Five that got it on with Matthew Fox, she can play the neuro surgeon who cant find love, or something

Victoria Rowell – why not? She’s had experience playing a doctor on TV and she's definetly believable, plus I want to see her gettin it on with a babeolicious new intern!

Jonathan Jackson – As the hot young gay intern that needs to be shown the ropes…and we’re not talking medicine here! OKayyyyy

Lisa Bonet – Of course as the hippy dippy bohemian doctor whose penchant for Holistic medicine clashes with the hospitals practices.

Jay Hernandez – Six Degrees is canceled right? He needs a job, plus he could make for a fine ass doctor.

Boris Kodjoe – the sexy new resident…the ultimate eye candy!! , I think I'm catching a fever

Haley Joel Osment – remember Doogie Howser M.D.? It could work right? It be kinda scandalous if he got it on with one of the residents though!, Plus he sees dead people.

Marissa Tomei – she'd be the sassy independent surgeon, plus ,wouldn’t you want Marissa to operate on you?

Lindsay Price - As the young go getter intern with an imposing family (sorta like a Cristina-in-waiting)

Blair Underwood – the new McDreamy

Neve Campbell – I miss Neve! She needs to comeback to TV and star on this show! I can see her as a resident who gets caught up with an intern

Sarah Gilbert – the obligatory lesbian doctor who is willing to prove that her sexuality is only a trivial part of who she is, but she initiates a sexual awakening to some of the female doctors on staff

Meredith Salenger – Patrick Dempsey made an 80’s comeback why not Meredith? Plus she’s still cute and her nick name could be Dr. Dream a Lil Dreamette

Dennis Haskins – Chief of Staff. Okay, I know we could be going out on a limb..but wouldn’t it be cool if Mr. Belding was the chief? It would be high school all over again!!

Angelika Film Center: Chill Spot O' The Week

Where is there a cool chill spot to go to in Manhattan and talk about movies?

Well I guess that's sort of a loaded question given the fact that there are a plethora of spots to go to in the city to just relax and chill. However, this place is special because there is a movie theater attached to the cafe. So you can get your movie watchin on as well as a latte with a double shot of espresso.

The Angelika Film Center is located in the heart of SoHo. If you are an indie fanatic, then go to this theater, because that is all you will ever see. You don't have to watch a movie to chill in the Angelika Cafe it's open to everyone. There is also free wifi in the cafe, so bring your laptop and have a discussion group amongst friends about movies and film.

The Angelika Film Center is located on 18 W Houston St.

There are also 3 locations in Texas.

Indie Pick O' The Day: Liberty Heights

This Barry Levinson film is a coming of age story about four friends in 1950’s Baltimore, Maryland. The film deals with racism and relationships. The protagonists are Jewish and run into anti-Semitic behavior among their peers whom they go to school with.

However, Ben a high school senior runs into more racial resistance when he starts dating Sylvia an attractive African-American student at his school. He really falls for this girl and even has to deal with the ignorant attitudes of his family members and friends.

Although this film sounds heavy and dramatic, its actually a lighthearted comedy. Some of the funniest moments in this film occur when Ben meets Sylvia’s parents for the first time and even when Ben and Sylvia attend a James Brown concert. If you look closely, you’ll notice that Sylvia’s father is none other than Dr. Richard Webber who is played by
James Pickens Jr. Yall don’t know who Dr. Webber is? Ok, time for Grey’s Anatomy 101…click here. Another Grey’s Anatomy alumni is in this film...Dr. Alex Karev. That’s Justin Chambers if you don’t watch Grey’s. He plays Trey Tobleseted. This was actually Justin’s first feature film.

Then the film stars
Joe Mantegna who has some gambling debt that he owes to a small-time drug dealer played by Orlando Jones (he also has Anthony Anderson as his sidekick). See, this movie isn’t exactly a drama..its really a comedy. My favorite scenes are with Jones and Anderson in their loan-shark business.

Last but certainly not least, is the yummy-skinny-but-sexy
Adrien Brody. He stars as Ben’s brother Van who is in love with Debbie. The perfect girl who he thinks is just too good for him. She of course doesn’t even realize he exists, but he does everything in his power to get noticed.
It’s a cute quirky film that has some sexy upcoming actors and a down-to-earth storyline about interracial relationships and the dynamics of high school cliques.

Just Another Manic Monday...

The Biggest Trick The Devil Ever Pulled Was Convincing The World He Didn't Exist

69 INT. RABIN'S OFFICE - DAY

KUJAN
Do you believe in him, Verbal?

Keaton always said: "I don't believe in

believe in God, and the only thing that
scares me is Keyser SOZE.

70 INT. WORKSHOP

Jack Baer and Rabin listen to Verbal on the speaker with one

RAB IN
You give this any weight, Agent Baer?

BAER
I can introduce you to Dan Metzheiser
from Justice. He has a file on Sate in
D.C. It's been a hobby of his for a few
years. A lot of guys equate him to that
reporter on the Incredible Hulk.

RABIN
Had you heard of him before?

BAER
On the street? A few times. Outside
stuff. Somebody was working for a guy who
was working for a guy who got money
through Keyser Soze. That kind of shit.
Could be an old badge. A hex sign to keep
people from fucking with you back when a
name meant something.

RAB IN
But you're here.

BAER
Shit yeah. I got a guy trying to walk out
of the hospital on d fried drumstick to
get away from SOZE. I'11 run it up the
flagpole.

71 INT. RABIN'S OFFICE 71

VERBAL
I came clean. I told it like it happened
on the boat. So what if I left out how I
got there? It's got so many holes in it,
the D.A. would've told me to blow amnesty
out my ass. So you got what you wanted
out of me. Big fucking deal.

KUJAN
And this is why you never told the D.A.

VERBAL
You tell me, Agent Kujan. If I told you
the Loch Ness Monster hired me to hit the
harbor, what would you say?

KUJAN
Turn state's evidence. Take the stand on
this and we'll hear it out.

VERBAL
I've got immunity now. What can you
possibly offer me?

KUJAN
If there is a Keyser Soze he'll be
looking for you.

VERBAL
Where's your head, Agent Kujan? Where do
you think the pressure's coming from?
Keyser Soze - or whatever you want to
call him - knows where I am right now.
He's got the front burner under' your ass
to let me go so he can scoop me up ten
minutes later. Immunity was just to deal
with you assholes. I got a whole new
problem when I post bail.

KUJAN
So why play into his hands? We can
protect you.

VERBAL
Gee, thanks, Dave. Bang-up job so far.
Extortion, coercion. You'll pardon me if
I ask you to kiss my pucker. The same
fuckers that rounded us up and sank us
into this mess are telling me They'll
bail me out? Fuck you. You think you can
catch Keyser Soze? You think a guy like
that comes this close to getting fingered
and sticks his head out? If he comes up
for anything, it will be to get rid of
me.
(beat)
After that, my guess is you'll never hear
from him again.

Indie Off Course: Bette's Dinner Party

A great scene from last weeks episode of The L word entitled Little Boy blue, I absolutely adore the Group scenes on this show the dynamic of their personalities colliding makes me giddy like a little bitch.

Plus Jennifer Beals is absolute perfection at the end of this scene, Oh how I adore thee...

SEEN O' The Day: Red Speaks To Parole Board

One of the best films ever made this scene is when Red (played by Morgan Freeman) states his case of being rehabilitated in front of the Parole Board. He's completely jaded at this point after being rejected for parole for years and years during the course of his prison sentence. Instead of telling them what they want to hear, he speaks from his heart.

I Know A Boy Who's Name Is Arnie...

These quotes gave Leo an Oscar nod

“Match in the gas tank…boom boom!”

"My shoe done fell off"

“I killed him Gilbert I killed him”

“I coulda drownded… I coulda drownded!”

“I could go anytime…anytime”

Indie Pick O' The Day: Requiem For A Dream

The performances in this film are absolutely stunning. I remember seeing this film and thinking, damn I never would have expected Marlon Wayans to carry out a role so dramatic and so vivid and frankly, I feel that he was snubbed for an Oscar nod if I may be so bold.

The film is about addiction. Plain and simple. Each of the protagonists in this film are addicted to not only illegal substances, but have been consumed by other addictions that take place in their life.

Sara, played by the eloquent
Ellen Burstyn is obsessed with watching TV. She watches tons of game shows. Day in and day out she sits on her couch in her living room and is glued to the tube. She soon finds out that she has an opportunity to appear on a game show and is concerned about her appearance. She starts taking diet pills to lose weight, and that’s where her drug addiction begins.

Harry (
Jared Leto) and Tyrone (Wayans) are both drug dealers. Tyrone is actually trying to get out and escape from his deteriorating life in the rough streets of Brooklyn. He gets with Harry and they decide to start a business selling clothing designs from Harry’s girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly).

After Tyrone gets arrested the group finds themselves back from where they started and resort to going back to their old habits. Things get desperate. So desperate that Marion decides to earn money and coke through sexual favors.

Each of these characters tragically have a downfall in some way throughout the course of the story. It’s hard hitting film about not only about addiction itself, but the consequences of addiction at all levels.

Indie Pick 'O' the Day: The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys

Kieran Culkin and Emille Hirsch star as pupils in this film about a group of adolescent boys who attend a catholic school run by the tyrannical one legged nun ; Sister Assumpta, (played by Jodie Foster) .
Engaging in general mischief and pranks the boys attempt to escape there oppressive academic surroundings through there self made comic book "The Atomic Trinity"
set in the 70's, the film follows the 4 boys exploits, including first loves and family Crisis.
but after Sister Assumpta confiscates there precious Atomic Trinity comic the boys set out on a plan to extract revenge on her to some ultimately dire consequences.
A mix of Stand by Me and The Virgin Suicides with some pretty cool Todd Mcfarlene Drawn comic book animation thrown in the mix, this 2002 film directed by Peter Care, takes a touching and fun look at the wild vestiges of these boys imagination ,there innocence and its eventual deterioration that is a part of coming of age.

Seen Of the day: V for Vendetta

A heartbreaking scene about government oppression and bigotry from the dazzling and brilliant James McTeigue film, V for Vendetta if you haven't seen it yet, well first of all have you been living under a rock?
and second, get thee to a video store pronto.
