The Mourning After

Here is an inside look at the upcoming film "The Mourning After" directed by Lawrence "Law" Watford.

The film is "The Mourning After"… It’s the story of two corporate executives who were supposed to be in the World Trade Center on 9/11, but instead were in a near by hotel room having an affair. They reunite 3 years later, still deeply affected by the event and why they survived.

The script is an adaptation of a one-act play, written by David Ray. Lawrence’s grad school classmate. "I always loved the story. I was there when David pitched it back in film school. The challenge for David and I was figuring out how to make the most tragic event in U.S. history a backdrop and not the story itself."

The script was originally written in 2002 and was a finalist in filmmaker.com’s short screenplay competition in 2004. But while there was a lot of interest in the topic, nobody thought it was a safe bet as a film…

In 2005 Lawrence contacted David after he completed his last film "A Christmas Wish" and asked if the script was still available… It was and Lawrence immediately began the development… His first target was pitching to actress, Nia Long in 2005. "Melvin Van Peebles introduced me to her at the American Black Film Festival, where "A Christmas Wish" premiered… I asked her if she was interested in producing and she said yes and went from there, but it didn’t develop pass that point"… the project needed funding.

Before he knew it years had passed. During that time, he brought on some friends to help in the development, but the lack of funding made it impossible keep them from other immediate and pressing commitments out in LA.

As more time passed, and having no new material to show Law became antsy and began to randomly reach out to Hollywood talent in the hope that they’d be as attracted to the dramatic nature of the project as he was. "I know that there are a lot of well-known actors in Hollywood, who are pigeon-holed into comedies, or adventure, or television and I was hoping that one of them would see the project as mutually beneficial… I provide them with material that allows them to really demonstrate their chops and they provide me with the celebrity that will help me get the film out in major film festivals"

Law’s efforts eventually paid off when actress Keesha Sharp (Girlfriends) decided to come on board. "Before she came on, there was no project. Just a lot of hope. But once she said she was in, the shoot date became whenever she was free and the budget became whatever I could raise to make it happen"

In an effort to make it worth Sharp’s journey from LA to New York, Law began to search for another Hollywood male to co-star. To help in that effort he brought on talent agent Angela Gulizio, of G&G Talent. "I met Angela on the set of "I Am Legend" and we hit it off. She’s tough and no nonsense, but a genuinely good person who I felt I could trust"

Lawrence and Angela began contacting talent reps, who he thought were attracted to the "audacity" of the concept and the script. "we had interest from Kevin Bacon’s reps, as well as Adam Beach (Flags of Our Fathers). The last meeting we had was with Malik Yoba. We had a great lunch and we were close, but his schedule didn’t allow for him to participate"

In the end it would be the intense and fast approaching schedule, coupled with an inflexible budget that would leave his film starless.

Law would eventually pull from his friends and the production became a cast and crew of familiars, with some new additions. "The crew was fantastic! We shoot for 5 days with a crew of 5, plus 2 interns… but in the end, everyone, including the actors were taking on crew positions"

Law admits that the schedule was grueling, with one day going as long as 17 hours. "It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I know that a no budget indies are like that, but I can’t wait for the day when I can do this as a low budget idie with 14 hour days and three weeks to shoot"

With the film almost ready for release, Law is hoping to score big, with a spot at the major national and international film festivals, where he hopes the subject of 9/11, along with the films intense drama would connect will audiences.

Greg Reese: A NY Indie Filmmaker

I grew up in Cleveland and made my first movie when I was 8 years old with a super 8mm film camera. It involved a paper machete asteroid, gasoline, plastic dinosaurs and my sandbox. In my adolescence I mastered the lost art of 4 track recording and making movies with 2 VCRs wired together with random radio shack rigs. I went off to be a Marine Corps Rifleman and later a guitarist for a few Rock and Roll bands and in 1998 I got my first computer and discovered the new reality we live in where anyone with a computer can produce competitive works of art. It was a glorious moment in my life and I recall telling everyone how I have sold my soul to the digital. In August of 2006 I moved out here to the New York City area to begin earning a living as an artist. Right now I continue to create what comes to me and try to explore every corner of the universe which exists within me. I just love doing it.

I am self taught with all that I do and so I have my own ignorant self taught way of doing things including doing everything myself. I write produce direct shoot light mic act mix edit and whatever else needs to be done. It saves time trying to find others to do it when I have no real budget to work with. This is the challenge I find I am confronted with here in New York. I am ignorant to the way things are done out here. So I continue to do what I love and I enjoy all the energy and all the international flavor here and I trust every day will bring me what I need. You can view some of my work at the following 2 links:

Gil Scrine, who also distributes Sophie Scholl,Enron and the Corporation closed a deal with
Ms Wilding in November last year. Buddha Wild was was not entered into the cost prohibitive festival circuit however the film , was chosen to screen at the TMG Luxury Suite in Sundance 2007 on its merit. "Wild" meaning to be one with nature, is a film that in a deftly created and entertaining manner, presents a positive and joyful message to the entire world. The critics and the general public who have been fortunate to see Buddha Wild Monk and have raved about this original and humble film.

Anna Wilding presented and spoke about her film "Buddha Wild Monk in the Hut" in November at the Calgary Buddhist Film Series in Canada 2006 and has spoken about the film and the making of it on several occasions throughout the world inlcuding being selected for the Screen Actors Guild Roll film Series. The critically-acclaimed film was one of six films selected for its "artistic merit and thematic diversity" and was highlighted at the Buddhist Film Series. The modest budget indie "Buddha Wild Monk In The Hut" was screened alongisde heavywight hitters "Little Buddha", "Last Samurai", "Crash", "Ghost Dog Way of
the Samurai" and "I Heart Huckabees."

Buddha Wild received the largest audience share alongside Last Samurai.
This small budget vibrant film screened for 2 weeks in cinema in Los Angeles garnering Critics Pick by LA Weekly Critic Mark Olsen who wrote: "GO ! Inspiration ! A Surprisingly Pleasant Trip," whilst Union Jack Newspaper stated: "Accomplished. Anna Wilding Captures Our Attention." Sean Hoade of Amazon writes "I was charmed by it. The films utter lack of pretension, coupled with an affectionate glimpse of what real Buddhist monks are like (funny and self effacing but serious about their mission), makes for a unique viewing experience."

A writer from Shambayla Sun, Moonrise Movies ," A delightfully sweet and accurate film"
Buddha Wild also recently had a four week run in Christchurch NZ .More theatrical roll outs will be hopefully be secured thorugh USA distribution. "Buddha Wild Monk In The Hut" was Directed, Produced, Written and Narrated by Anna Wilding, telling the simple and pure tale of monks on a missionary monastery. At times humorous film it focuses on the thoughts and meaning of peace and loving kindness in this day and age of war and the Asian culture and also the role of women. Despite limited access to large cameras and with the filmmaker facing constant days of rain, the film has been woven together in a complex and intelligent style that suits a Buddhist narrative.

The film has consistently received good houses and praise for its colorful, engaging yet
natural story telling by Anna Wilding and clever but easy to understand distillation of the complex Buddhist and Asian cultural beliefs. Since its limited screenings, "Buddha Wild Monk In The Hut" has captured a host of outstanding reviews: "the nonlinear style is fascinating -- It is an entertaining and informative, even compelling, ode to the life and mission of the world's hundreds of thousands of monks, especially the Theravadins in south-east Asia, and if you're interested in Buddhism -- or in human nature in general -- and get the chance to see Buddha Wild, do yourself a favor and take advantage of the opportunity."

"Buddha Wild Monk In The Hut" was produced, directed and narrated by Anna Wilding, whose
additional responsibility included screenplay and cinematography. Original Music by Charles David Denler and Sound Editing by Alasdair Kindcaid. Anna Wilding made the entertaining film which has appealed to main stream audiences to counteract instances of racism she witnessed in the hope that a greater understanding of cultural diversity in a positive way would subconsciously bring about a stronger step towards peace. The film is also available at

Chris: An Indie Screenwriter

I am an amateur screenwriter (I already have a full time, professional career--I write for fun and relaxation). I have about a dozen screenplays in construction lately. Mainly thrillers, adventure, low-budget urban drama, crime, SF, and biography.

My background is in history, English and American lit, art/design, philosophy/religion, environmental studies/engineering.I'm a caucasian male, in my early thirties, and I live in Brooklyn. Below is a sample of my general style. It has some explictives, sorry. Thanks for the opportunity to contribute. I'm interested in networking with other NYC writers.

Chris from Brooklyn...

snippet from "Controlled Skid"

1. EXT. ROUTE 66. NIGHT.

A brand-new BMW 238 convertible is hurtling through a summer night down
the Route 66 highway, on the outskirts of Cheyenne, Wyoming--at about 80 m.p.h. It has momentarily locked doors with a large 12-ton truck in the neighboring lane.

An ear-splitting screech of metal-on-metal creases the night; lasting first
a mile, then two. Howling wind cocooning the small sports car and its oblivious occupants. The situation is frightening and insane; but the BMW does not pull away.

2. INT. BMW 238. NIGHT.

The passenger, LEILA, is frustratedly jabbing at her forearm with a
hypodermic, trying to find the vein. She is about twenty-two, a
sometime
prostitute, one-time American Goth/dysfunctional wrist-slashing
middle-child. Fun is her middle name.

HUGO STAAB, (driving) is a hip, muscular, blonde drug-dealer with
dreams of
being an music television V.J. sustaining him as he approaches the ripe
old
age of 28--is completely inattentive to the shrieking proximity of the
large
truck throbbing inches from his skull. He fixes instead on his female
companion, his eyes not even on the road, cooing softly to her . . .

HUGO:
Leila, please, honey. . . c'mon . .

LEILA
I'm trying! Godamnit! You liar! Shut the hell up! Turn on the ceiling
light
why don't you?

HUGO:
(embarrassed, but recovering)
Yeah, sure, okay. . I'm the liar now. Riiiiiiight.

LEILA: You said we'd be engaged before we left KC. Where are we now,
East
Bumblefuck, Montana?

HUGO:
(getting pissed now)
Listen baby-- when I was in hiding behind the shower curtain last night
and
you were with Friday night's Tinkerbell . . let me tell you something,
you're the liar okay? Didn't we "pinky swear" never to do our special
trick,
with anyone else? You think I'm deaf or something? I heard, I heard. .

LEILA:
(glancing sideways)
Yeah, wha-a-t-ever. . what am I supposed to do when the guy starts it?
You
didn't patent that trick.

HUGO:
Nevermind. Hey, find that freakin vein before I take it away. And, for
your
information, we're under battle conditions here--no lights. Look,
what'dya
think would happen if we got pulled over right now for a busted
tail-light?
With your swords in the trunk an all?
(exchange of glares)

LEILA: Where I go, my blades and my altar go--you KNEW that, Since Day
1. I
TOLD you. And you've got a bit of a knife collection too y'know--

HUGO:
Bullshit, this is Wyoming. Springsteen country, you know? Martin Sheen.
Everyone has a knife out here--but swords and Wicca? Fuck! On top of
the
shit in your lap!

LEILA:
(snorting)
Springsteen! Even I know he's Jersey!

HUGO
(loudly, frothing)
Look! I score for you, don't I? even out here in the middle of nowhere.
But
after that it's a bad division of labor!! You come up with the scratch,
I do
the all the dangeous work, you get all the joy--what exactly do I get,
huh?
Used goods!

LEILA
(drops needle; pounds her head violently on dashboard at the start of
this
familiar lecture)
F_ck! F_ck! F_ck! SHUT the F_CK UP!! You think it's not dangerous, then
you
bend over for these goobers! Hell you'd probably like it!

HUGO
(No longer riled. He leers evilly. Smooth and back in control, now
tapping
out one of his fave beats on the seatback, thus driving one-handed)

INTERCUT WITH:
MACK TRUCK
Gaping, shrieking face of TRUCK DRIVER, five feet away, two car doors
locked, still 80 m.p.h., life passing before eyes. Trying to avoid
crushing
the BMW and stay in lane. SOUND of a massive gouge being opened on his
driver-side door; sparks shooting from wheel-well, BMW continues to
drag.

HUGO:
(resting one hand lazily on the gearshift)
An' look. .

(menacing, low)
I gotta 'nother bone to pick with you before we get to Cheyenne .

LEILA:
Yeah? WHAAAAAAAT MIGHT THAT BE!? (baiting him out of habit)

HUGO (returns at top of his lungs)
Don't mess with my hygiene products, do you f_cking hear me? I will
hook
your pussy up to the battery of this sucker and fry you on the hood
like an
egg!!! (laughing now, LEILA suddenly laughing with him, rubs her
crotch,
vamping)

3. EXT. ROUTE 66 EXIT RAMP. NIGHT.

Finally, miraculously, the two vehicles disengage, (no thanks to HUGO).
The
1/2 Mack Truck veers onto a grassy median and slams to a ferocious
halt,
nearly
tipping over. The BMW 238 continues lazily (60 m.p.h.) into the town of
Cheyenne. . .

James Chean: An Indie Filmmaker

James Chean has spent the last 30 years making films in the US, but is now back here working on a project with respected Myanmar director U Kyee Myint. IT has been over 29 years since James Chean left Myanmar for America. He was just 14 years old at the time.

“Since my parents moved to America, I had no choice but to go with them,” he said.
It proved a fortuitous turn of events for the teenager, as by his second year there he was appearing in Chinese action films as a stunt man.
He quickly made the transition to behind the camera and by 18 he was working as a cinematographer. By 23 he had already added the titles of production assistant and director to his CV.
At 33, he has the films The Last Eve, Sunset Society, The Singer Downstairs, Silent Scream and Alibi to his name and has received mentions in US film industry bibles such as Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter.

He followed up a stint as assistant editor at Paramount Pictures and MGM studios from 1985 to 1986 with work on music videos and commercials, then in 1996 started his own film company KYC Production.

“I wanted to make my own films so I started the production company in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Since its inception, KYC has been involved in numerous film and video projects,” he says.
With filmmaking success in the US well under his belt, he has been lured back to his place of birth by the opportunity to work with legendary Myanmar director U Kyee Myint on a film.
“I came back mainly for a visit,” he said while in Yangon earlier this month, adding that he misses his homeland.

“But I also really want to make a Myanmar movie with U Kyee Myint.”The pair met when Chean visited Myanmar 10 years ago. “I had stopped making movies for a few years,” U Kyee Myint said. The meeting with Chean inspired him to get back to work.

“When I met Mr Chean and we talked about Myanmar movies, I saw that he was really interested in making a movie in Myanmar,” he said. The pair have started working on a script. But in the meantime, Chean is off to South Korea where his film The Last Eve is being shown.
“I will be back but I can’t say exactly when yet,” he said with a smile.

Victoria Linchong: A NY Indie Filmmaker

I am currently attempting to gain critical mass in order to snowball my feature film GILDED CAGE into production sometime this spring. Some nibbles but haven't hauled in any big fish yet. Just little minnows and little minnows pretending to be sharks. Berlin Film Festival just emailed me saying that I was a "top candidate" for the Berlinale Talent Campus (I can forward you their email if you want proof!) BUT... they didn't accept me in the end. Sigh. I think I have have enough of these "yes but no" letters to paper a small room. I wonder if there's any way to make hay out of Berlin saying "yes but no".

Maybe blogging it would be an idea? A bit about myself - I am a Taiwanese-American writer/director with 10 + years in experimental theater, making the transition to film. As a theater producer, my credits include the world premiere of two of Tennesee Williams' last short plays and several plays by Nobel Prize nominee James Purdy. I have also produced an OBIE Award winning anti-war event and two of my own plays, the most recent one being RITE OF RETURN at Theater for the New City in 2004. I wrote and directed the short film DOUBLE DEALING, which was a finalist in the 2nd Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout sponsored by MTV and Asian Cinevision. You can also find out more about me at http://vlinchon.tripod.com/ or at www.directarts.org
