Scream 4! The premier in pictures.

The Scream 4 premier rocked Hollywood last night. The mega event brought together Scream alumni and new faces alike. The premier streamed live on-line at 9:30 Eastern time, here's some of our fave pics from the star studded event.
Scream 4 hits theaters THIS FRIDAY people. Get into it!

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Someones taken their love of Scream movies one step too far.

I'm a pretty damn cool guy, I rock my leather jackets collar up. I wear my pants sagged down so that my stained polka-dot boxers peak out from underneath. I'm usually cold and aloof about my feelings, I sprinkle words like "totes" and "gnarly" into everyday conversation. I also (insert one more bad ass thing here) . Basically, I'm the coolest thing under the sun. But nothing brings the secret dork out of me like a Scream movie.
Those damn Scream movies! It's the one series (X-men excluded) that can put me into full tilt Fan boy mode. I check the websites for the latest updates. I feed on production gossip like it sustains me and yes I even frequent the fan forums to dissect, argue and even countdown to the latest happenings of our beloved Woodsboro crew. I nerd out, I admit it. I've come to terms with it. Scream is the Star wars of horror films and I'm sleeping overnight at the ticket booth dressed as Princess Leia. Between Kevin Williamsons razor-sharp scripts, Wes Cravens brisk and tormenting at the drop of a dime eye, and a trio of characters I've grown to love, these films are cinematic crack.
The fascination started at 13, captivated by the commercials for this R rated film, that seemed so taboo and so painfully cool at the same ti
me. Months after its initial run in theaters I was finally able to see it, (thank you early pay-per-view) It hooked me. It was the horror movie that was smarter than horror movies. These characters existed in our world. It was approachable horror and it opened the floodgates for my love of the genre, something I will always be grateful to the series for doing.
Riveting
, Shocking and addicting all at once. Scream delivered!
When news of casting for the
sequel began to leak, and I learned that my favorite ingénue at the time, Sarah michelle-gellar (Swans Crossing 4Life!) , and an actual black person would be in it, Jada Pinkett (giving Ms. Drew a run for her money) They had me, hook line and sinker.
After seeing scream 2 opening night (thanks mom), I was officially full on obsessed.

A sequel that in my opinion was better than the original!
Kevin Williamson became my god, and I discovered a new fascination with celluloid.
It would surprise those who aren't fans of the series to know how many people of my generation the Scream films have inspired to become writers and filmmakers. There is an energy about the movies, a freshness that I liken to Tarantino’s early oeuvre.
Naturally, as Scream 3 reared it's head I devoured every new piece of informati
on I could. Kevin Williamson was too busy, with his new television series Wasteland, to pen the third and reportedly final installment. So they brought in Ehren Krueger (the Ring, Arlington Road), to write the script, big mistake!. I won't recount all the hoopla and drama associated with this decision .. It’s been discussed ad-nauseum on-line, simply search "Scream 3 mess" . The Series suffered, Ehren just didn't get "it". The voice, the intelligence of the first two films was muffled by a cliché' ,Scooby doo mystery vibe. Scream 3 disappointed critically and was the least successful of the original trilogy. Scream had become what it was sent out to kill, what should have ended the Iconic series with a bang ended in a whimper.
Kevin Williamson, is Scream; period. That is why fans rejoiced when we'd learned that he would be returning for sole writing duties on Scream 4. The voice was back! Kevins idea for the 4th film was apparently so good it convinced the ever weary star of the Scream films Neve Campbell, Wes Craven, Courtney Cox and David Arquette to return Everyone was back.
Now
11 years after Scream 3, an excitement that I have not felt for the release of a film since , well the third one, has returned. Stronger than ever. I'm trolling the forums. I'm buying the Limited edition magazine covers and Dammit I'm counting down till the release of this epic series. (there are red X’s on my wall calendar if you wanna take a look). Will it be worth the wait? Early test screenings have been incredibly positive, most reviews calling it the best of all the sequels... seeing as how much I loved Scream 2, that's saying a hell of a lot. With a fresh new cast that includes Alison brie, Emma Roberts, Hayden Pantierre, Adam Brody, Veronica Mars, and a bunch of actresses from CW shows that I'm too old to watch, buzz is deafening for Scream 4, and I'm not ashamed to admit that if you listen close enough, you can hear my voice among them.
Scream 4
comes out April 15th!

Movie Review: Frailty

I know this movie is an oldie...but its also a goodie. "There are demons among us" echoes the voice of Mr. Meiks played by Bill Paxton as a man who has a vision by an angel and becomes a messenger of mercy from God to destroy demons. In the movie Frailty, the story begins with Fenton Meiks played by Matthew McConaughey as man who claims he knows the man who is known as the God's Hands killer. He admits that the serial killer is his own brother.

From there Meiks tells the story to FBI agent Wesley Doyle played by Powers Boothe the story of his childhood and what it was like growing up in a single parent home with his father and brother. His father is sent on a mission from God to destroy the demons that are among us. These demons appear in human form and young Fenton believes his father is killing innocent human beings and not demons.

Fenton tries to tell the local police that his father is crazy, but no one believes him. Soon after Fenton is punished by his father forced to stay imprisioned in the backyard of a makeshift dungeon he created for disposing the bodies of his victims.

This film is a thriller/horror film that will have you on the edge of you seat minute by minute. Stunning performance by Bill Paxton, who also directed the film. A late review, but a film certainly worth its wait!!!

The summary of the movie ends here, because there is a pretty intense plot twist that shall remain secret until you have seen the film, but let's just say as someone who can predict a plotline very well, I didn't see it comin! As a sidenote; it was good to see McConaughey in a film where he didn't play a stoner or a wisecrackin douche who has commitment issues with women. Of course this film came out in 2001 and he hasn't really played against type since. Poor Matthew.

Dumb Bitches: Why Has Fangoria Gone to Hell?

Each of us got into independent cinema through a different route. For some of us, the gateway drug took the form of American auteurs like Soderberg, Tarantino, and Anderson, while others got their feet wet with outrageous European cinema from the likes of Fellini, Bergman, and Antonioni. For some, it was the bizarre stylings of John Waters, while others grooved to the freakish insanity of Ed Wood. For me, the big, gaping doorway was Fangoria magazine.

In the late 1980's, the horror genre was a wasteland, a cinematic red-light district, frequented by adrenaline junkies, moral reprobates, and the occasional social satirist with a strong stomach and a hearty streak of nihilism. While the video stores in my area had a thin selection of "genre" films, the local record store kept a nice stock of bargain-priced low-budget gore flicks in stock. As I pored through them, trying to decide between a badly dubbed version of Tenebrae and the lurid promise of Mother's Day, I soon realized that I needed someone or something to guide me through the maze of genius and dreck.

In time, Fangoria became my guidebook, my advisor, and my shopping list. In well-written, thoughtful articles, it introduced me to artists like Rick Baker and Tom Savini, auteurs like George Romero and Sam Raimi, and great fans like Forrest Ackerman. I learned about the personalities that put together these films and I learned to view movies through the eyes of the director, the scriptwriter, and the actor. In short, I learned to be a critical moviegoer, not merely a passive consumer.

In late high school and college, my tastes began to wander away from horror and into other esoteric cinema. I started working my way through the "great directors" and "best films," learning about the many paths that independent cinema used to present messages that were fresh and new, relatively unscathed by the corrupting influence of test screenings and rewrites. Although I stopped reading Fangoria, I often found myself wishing for a similarly well-written guide to the broader world of independent cinema.

Recently, I was feeling a little nostalgic, so I picked up the latest copy of Fangoria. To say the least, I was not amused. Over the last couple of decades, the independent, honest voice of my childhood had become transformed. Sure, it still had the same lurid covers and many of the section titles sported the same names, but the cover price was a whopping $9, placing it out of the range of many customers. Worse yet, the extortionate cost yielded "reviews" that were little more than puff pieces, a few retrospectives, and a lot of advertisements. Gone was the analysis, the interviews, and the prickly journalistic voice that had made Fangoria such a useful resource when I was a kid. The new version was clearly a thinly-disguised license to print money, an income generator that had traded honesty for ad revenue and sincerity for cynical greed. In short, Fangoria had well and truly been de-fanged!

Top 10 Parker Posey Movies

Who embodies New York indie cinema more than actress Parker Posey?? She's considered to be the Queen of independent cinema, however she's crossed-over a few times to mainstream to get a bigger paycheck. Hey it doesn't hurt. It seems like almost every indie film that has come out in the last 10 years has Parker in it. I remember 8 years ago when I used to work at a video store there was this one guy who rented all of these films that starred Parker Posey. I didn't quite know who she was back then and he insisted I rent some of her movies. I gotta say, I can see why the guy hada thing for her. She's one of the best and yet most underrated actresses in Hollywood. But we love her and want to pay homage to our IndieSeen Favorite!!

Here is our list (both mainstream and independent) of our favorite Parker Posey films!!

10. Superman Returns - This movie sucked major monster's balls. However, thanks to the scene stealing performances of Parker Posey and Kevin Spacey, I acutally kept my eyes open while watching this craptacular flick!

9. Scream 3 - The last installment on this horror trilogy was a hilarious train wreck. We can't say much about the quality of the film's plot or ragged performances, but Posey posing as Gale Weathers was definitely a treat! Posey played it so well we would have been better off having her play the original Gale Weathers

Fast forward to 2:40 see Parker in all her glory

8. SubUrbia - Linklater's signature classic about losers and burnouts features five teens who have nothing else better to do with their lives. However a mutual friend becomes a successful rock star and his manager is Erica played by Posey. Erica is obnoxious, stuck up, and pretentious...just like we like our Parker!

7. The Oh in Ohio - Posey plays a woman who is orgasmically-challenged. Uh..I just made that term up. But basically she can't climax and need some serious help! Uuuuuhhhhaaahhhh!

6. A Mighty Wind - What better way to enjoy a movie night than to watch a folk song mockumentary? Posey is by far the best when it comes to the Christopher Guest improvisational flicks!

Parker Posey is not featured in this clip

5. Best In Show - Here's another one for ya. This anal-retentive A personality dog owner will do everything it takes to make sure her puppy is the winner! A sure fire winner!

4. Clockwatchers - Working as a temp at a shitty job never seemed so adventerous as it does in this Posey classic.

3. The House Of Yes - In the film she plays a woman who is obsessed and thinks she is Jackie Kennedy and has a creepy “incestuous-like” relationship with her brother Marty who brings his fiancée with him to visit the family. It’s a fun dysfunctional family type flick.

2. Waiting For Guffman - A hilarious comedy about a small town who puts on a pageant, despite the residents lack of theatrical or stage performance experience. Again...Posey kills it in another mockumentary classic

1. Party Girl - After getting in trouble with the law, Posey ends up having to work as a librarian for her godmother to pay her back for bailing her out. Posey is a New York night life scenester at heart and has to wrestle with her burning desires to drug, drink, and be fabulous and her godmother's constant finger waving dissaproval.

Weird Ass Movies

Here is our list of the weirdest ass movies we've seen so far. There's a lot out there...you may agree or disagree...but these movies are just fuggin weird!!!

Oldboy - A guy is imprisoned for 15 years by a some random hot guy who has an agenda....but the story becomes even creepier when the former prisoner falls for a woman who turns out to be...aiight we won't spoil it for you...but lets just say its WEIRD.

Female Trouble - A spoiled schoolgirl runs away from home, gets pregnant while hitchhiking, and ends up as a fashion model for a pair of beauticians who like to photograph women committing crimes....the spoiled schoolgirl is played by a dude. The legendary Divine.

Heathers - Veronica Sawyer plays "Bonnie" to JD who's her "Clyde" and is fascinated with murder and mayhem. Veronica accidentally finds herself involved in a school killing spree---Veronica like totally didn't mean to kill her best friend Heather and stuff...

Battle Royale - Wow. Wish I wrote this film. A Japanese film about a group of students who are recruited to Battle Royale Island. The kids are assigned to kill each other one by one and whoever survives is the winner! A lesson to juvenile disobedience.

Pumpkin - A girl falls in love with a retard. Nuff said. (excuse our political incorrectness)

Nowhere - This film goes nowhere. A bunch of California teens trippin on acid, consuming X, and have tons and tons of orgy sex. Okay...maybe that is somewhere.

Dumplings - An aging actress tries to maintain her youth by eating steamed dumplings. So what's so weird about that?? It's what INSIDE of the dumplings that gets freaky.

Twin Falls Idaho - Siamese twins and one of the twins fall in love with this goth-like chick. Gets a lil bizarre when the they decide to have sex.

WTF??? Another Saw Film???

Aiight guys so get geared up and ready for the "FIF" installment of the Saw franchise. Obviously they are trying to be the next Freddy or Jason franchise....well I guess we now have a movie to look forward to watching every freakin Halloween nite!

And YES...Tobin Bell will in fact be coming back for Round 5 ladies and gentz. In Saw V, he'll be joined by Costas Mandylor and Scott Patterson as Detective Hoffman and FBI Agent Strahm, respectively. David Hackl is stepping up his obligations to the "Saw" series as production designer and is sitting in the director's chair, too. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton penned the script. Shooting begins in Toronto on March 17th and is aiming for an October 24th release date.

I know most of you all think it's pathetic that another Saw film is set to go into production...but I ain't gonna lie...I'll probably spend my 11 bucks to go see it. Part 4 was a piece of shit...but I actually liked the first 3 sequels. So I'll give this movie another chance....

C'mon yall...like yall haven't seen all of the Friday the 13th flicks!

Indie Pick O' The Day: Dead Alive

Dead Alive (aka Braindead) is a movie that is good, gory, goofy, horrific fun.An early film by Peter Jackson the movie contains no big names and acting that isn't the greatest. So why should anyone see this film? It's just good ol' fun. Set in 1950's New Zealand we follow a mama's boy named Lionel. His mama is far from sympathetic. In other words she's a cruel, selfish bitch who keeps a tight leash on her gawky awkward son. A Hispanic girl named Paquita develops a crush on Lionel and they see each other secretly arranging a date to the local zoo.

At the beginning of the film poachers abduct a Sumtran rat monkey from an isolated area in New Zealand and it lands in the zoo. This rat monkey's bite turns those who were once alive into the walking undead. Well while mother is sneaking around and spying on her son's date she gets bitten by the Sumtran rat monkey (and I say thank goodness the bitch got it first). When mommy gets sick and becomes a zombie Lionel tries to cover it up and lock her in the basement. Let's just say it doesn't work. Before we know it the nurse, some greasers, and even a priest become zombies. And while a smart person would have killed them by shooting them in the head Lionel decides to start a zombie collection in his basement. (And I'm sure his house reeked) He keeps them in line by injecting them with animal tranquilizer. After the funeral for Lionel's mother, his uncle Les tries to embezzle Lionel's inheritance after he discovers the collection of bodies in the basement. Lionel promises to give Les the mansion and the money if he doesn't go to the police. So Uncle Les decides to celebrate his new found fortune by throwing a good ol' fashioned house party. Needless to say the zombies get out of the basement and wreak havoc. This is when the real fun begins.

Peter Jackson's seamless editing and special effects on a low budget are amazing. There are parts of the film where I had to say "How did he do that?" It looked real. You barely can tell when it cuts from an actor to a dummy. It's seamless. It's brilliant. And this movie is far from terrifying. It's more of comic horror. There were parts when I was rolling from laughter. I must admit however it is not for those who are queasy or have a weak stomach. This film is very gory but the humor balances it out. Best quote from Dead Alive "I kick ass for the Lord".

Indie Pick O' The Day: The Descent

Are you in the mood for a scary movie tonite? Then you need to rent this UK indie hit that came out last year. The Descent scared the living shit out of me. Pardon my French, but its true. Horror films typically do not scare me. It’s hard to make a GOOD scary movie. However this film did it for me.

After a tragic accident, six friends reunite for a caving expedition. A group of female friends led by Juno, who encounter bloodthirsty creatures when they get trapped in a mountain cave due to a rockfall. Worst of all, they their friendships sour and they discover their real fear is from each other.

The beginning of the film has a bit of a slow pace. The backstory of the main character is set up and the motive for why the girls take the cave expedition trip is slowly established. However, once they get into that cave boy..it’s on! The film take a complete turn and these women are trying to survive and running away from a community of cave-dwelling mutants that have an affinity for human flesh!! Ya gotta see this movie. Just make sure you see it with a friend, cuz it WILL scare you. My ears hurt when I was in the theater because so many people kept screaming aloud. There are several “jump” moments where you slightly jump out of your chair because you are so surprised as to what is happening.

This film’s director
Neil Marshall won the Best Director Award at the British Independent Film Awards.

Indie Pic 'O' the day: One Missed Call

One Missed Call
This movie is creepy. It’s basically about a group of classmates in the hipster district of Tokyo, that start mysteriously receiving voicemail messages from their future “selves” in the form of the sound of them reacting to their own violent deaths.
The creepiest aspect of this film is the ring tone of their cell phone. Apparently they all have the same deadly ring tone. How scary is that when all the sudden your phone rings and it’s a ring tone you’ve never heard before! chills

The exact date and time of each of their deaths are predicted in the message log of their cell phone. So the technology of each of these guy’s phones are pretty advanced….I mean like they have to have that message log feature on their phone in order for the whole date and time of death predictions to work right?

Right.

There are moments when the story fell a little flat, but I give the writers credit for coming up with a new age story about a cell phone that can predict one’s own death.

Apparently an American version of this film is being made. Why do we always have to make remakes of great Asian horror flicks?
I mean why cant they just release the original versions, and dub it or something for those ID's that dont like to read, because we kinda suck at the whole remake thing.
The new version will star Ed Burns and
Shannyn Sossamon
. Hmm..ok?? Not the kind of casting I would expect, but what the hell right?
