October 9, 2008 - New York , NY – CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival, New York ’s largest music event and one of the world’s most eclectic showcases of new films, is proud to debut new additions to its 2008 event starting October 21 in NYC: its first Community Outreach Initiative, inaugural Cinemini Short Film Contest and CMJ Comedy Showcase.
New for 2008 is CMJ’s Community Outreach Initiative, a comprehensive integration of local businesses and other community establishments into the festival through exclusive discounts and activities. CMJ has formed official relationships with The Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce and the Lower East Side Business improvement District to further strengthen its relationship with the local communities that host the majority of CMJ events. Community partners include such establishments as Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Chipolte, Famous Ray’s Pizza, East Village Music Store, Shut Skates, Lil’ Frankie’s, B Bar and Grill, Babycakes NYC, and many more.
“Each year, CMJ strives to present new and unique aspects to the festival,” said CMJ Music Marathon Founder and Executive Producer, Joanne Abbot Green. “We are proud to further our relationship with the city of New York by partnering with local community groups and business owners to be an official and invaluable part of CMJ 2008.”
CMJ Film Festival is also proud to announce its inaugural Cinemini Short Film Contest in search of the freshest new voices in short narrative and documentary films. Winners from each category will be selected to receive a prize package with essentials for their next shoot from partners JVC, Avid, Entertainment Partners and more. Legendary film producer David Picker (The Jerk, The Crucible, A Hard Day’s Night) will chair the narrative jury alongside Emmy winning documentarian Mark Marabella (FBI Files, Grounded on 9/11) who will chair the documentary jury.
They will be joined by Producer Lydia Dean Pilcher (Darjeeling Limited); feature film producer Brian Peter Falk (The Loomis Gang, Embassy Row Pictures); Vice President, Non Fiction and Alternative Programming for A&E Elaine Frontain Bryant; documentary and feature film Executive Producer John Schwally (Frontline, Dateline NBC, Nature); Executive in Charge of Production for BBC Shirley Escott; and international documentary producer Tanja Medding (Sally Gross: the pleasure of stillness, The Gates).
Along with being a hub for music and cinema, New York City is also the nexus of the American improv and comedy scene. Accordingly, CMJ Comedy Showcase will welcome superstars and stars-in-the-making to the CMJ stages this year. The Comedy Showcase, presented by The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and sponsored by The Onion, will take place at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Chelsea and The Bitter End in the West Village (please see schedule below).
CMJ Music Marathon, taking place October 21-25 across New York City, draws tens of thousands of professionals from all sectors of the music/film industry and over 100,000 music fans who converge on the Big Apple to catch the latest buzz band, cool indie film or learn more about the ever-changing music industry from key insiders and celebrities.
